Covid Dolls

My series of Covid Dolls evolved from an installation of fairies’ houses placed on the banks of the Charles River during the summer of 2020. This Turtle Studios project launched while the studios were closed made me reflect on houses, spiritual beings, confinement and the weight of domesticity.

I built these light weight sculptures by using different sized shepherds hooks, creating a loom with garden threads and weaving around it.

The Dolls are entities that, like the drawings of Louise Bourgeois’ Femmes-Maisons, carry their own houses within themselves. The gender and identities of these protective beings, however is undefined. They are neither man nor woman, human nor animal, animal nor vegetal.
