The series Galatea’s Cave is a response to the patriarchal myth of Galatea and Pygmalion. Pygmalion was a sculptor who despised women. Upon creating a sculpture of the ideal woman, he was granted the wish to see his artwork come to life.

My series of four paintings muses on the flesh and blood and therefore imperfect Galatea, first becoming aware of her own body (the cave becomes a symbol of the uterus), then developing her agency.

These paintings evoke the transformation of Galatea from created object of desire to self-aware being and active creator.
