Anne-Marie Delaunay-Danizio began painting at seventeen in 1970s Paris. Her artistic path has never followed a straight line. She moved between painting, sculpture, teaching, museum studies, curation, writing, motherhood, and other forms of creative work before returning fully to painting through her MFA studies.
Today, her studio practice is rooted in abstraction, but the work is deeply connected to the physical world. Bodies, animals, plants, landscapes, fossils, internal organs, memories, and imagined organisms all find their way into her paintings.
For Anne-Marie, making art is both an act of discovery and an affirmation of being alive.

A Dance of Trauma and Celebration
There is both joy and tension in Anne-Marie's work. She delights in color and organic shapes, building paintings through layers, erasure, drawing, staining, and reconstruction.
Her paintings often blur boundaries: between genders, between human and non-human, between body and landscape, and between what exists on the surface and what remains hidden underneath.
Humor and visual wordplay coexist with difficult subjects. A shape may suggest an internal organ, an animal, a landscape, a fossil, or something that cannot quite be named. The meaning is intentionally open.
Painting as Discovery
Anne-Marie doesn't begin every painting knowing exactly what it will become.
She works through layers of diluted acrylic paint, staining, glazing, drawing, erasing, and rebuilding. Shapes emerge gradually. Some are deliberately created; others reveal themselves during the process.
She often works on several paintings simultaneously, moving between the floor, wall, table, and easel. Acrylic gives her the fluidity and forgiveness she looks for, while paint markers, acrylic ink, charcoal, graphite, and other materials allow her to draw back into the surface.
The result is work that feels discovered rather than simply planned.

Beyond the Studio
Anne-Marie's practice extends beyond painting. She has worked in museum education and curation, served on arts organizations and boards, taught languages, written creatively, and pursued advanced studies in visual art, museum studies, and art history.
Her work reflects that breadth. Art history, mythology, feminism, biology, personal memory, literature, travel, and contemporary life all enter the studio.
Exhibited Throughout New England and Beyond
Anne-Marie's work has appeared in galleries, juried exhibitions, cooperative galleries, museums, corporate collections, and virtual exhibitions across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and internationally.
Her exhibition history includes venues in Cambridge, Arlington, Lowell, Manchester, Boston, New York City, and Luxembourg.
